DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, September 14th for a magic picture card-making workshop led by Leeway x NextFab Artist-in-Residence\, Colette Fu\, an award-winning pop-up book artist.\nThe Mid-Autumn Festival\, a.k.a. Mooncake Festival\, is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture – a time when family and friends get together and celebrate. To ring in the occasion\, we’ll make magic picture cards\, enjoy mooncakes\, and sip on bubble tea. All supplies will be provided\, but feel free to bring in any photos or artwork you might want to incorporate into a card. All levels are welcome! \nLearn more about Colette’s 2023 Leeway x NextFab residency here. \nOpen tours of the NextFab makerspace will be available after the competition of Colette’s workshop. \nABOUT THE LEEWAY x NEXTFAB ARTIST RESIDENCY\nEstablished in 2018\, The Art and Technology Residency (ATR) is an opportunity for a Leeway grantee to utilize the facilities and equipment at NextFab\, a network of collaborative makerspaces for professional makers. The artist-in-residence receives a $2\,500 stipend from Leeway and access to NextFab’s spaces to create their work. Learn more about NextFab and Leeway. \nVENUE ACCESSIBILITY\nThe workshop will take place at our North Philadelphia location in the large conference room space\, about 100 feet forward and slightly to the right of the front entrance. There are no steps to enter the building – only a paved\, concrete ramp to the front door. There are gender-neutral restrooms close to the workshop space as well as a free on-site parking lot\, available for members and visitors. Masks are encouraged in the space\, but not required.

DESCRIPTION:We will be welcoming the Philly Fixers Guild’s Repair Fair back to our spaces to help you fix and repair\, fix\, and assemble your tricky items. Why replace it when you can repair it? This urban volunteer repair outfit will help you fix your stuff\, free of charge\, and they’re ready for the challenge. Got tangled jewelry\, IKEA furniture that needs assembling\, or a vacuum cleaner that’s on the fritz? Sit down with one of their volunteers and they’ll help you hands-on with fixing it. While they do have some limits\, they encourage a read of their ground rules before bringing in your items. Reserve a spot here. \nOn view in the NextFab Gallery are two local artists and members\, Alan Levine and Bill Russell. Alan Levine is showcasing his colorful and vibrant sculptures\, alongside Bill Russell’s functional and beautiful furniture. \nRolling tours of NextFab will be available\, and light drinks and refreshments will be served. \nGuidelines: \nTheir talented volunteer fixers love the challenge of repairing everyday things. However\, we have some limits and guidelines so things can run a bit more smoothly: \n\nGuests are required to stay with their item and participate in the repair (dropping an item off for them to work on defeats the purpose of the Repair Fair)\nIf you already know your item needs a particular replacement part\, order it early and bring it with you to the fair\nAs long as you can carry the item in\, we will do our best to get it repaired\nThere will\, of course\, be some things that cannot reasonably be fixed or might need a part ordered. In these cases\, a fixer will recommend the best course of action. Usually\, they will be able to supply you with info on part numbers and repair steps so you can complete the repair at home on your own!\n\nCan’t make it to the Repair Fair? They don’t want you to miss out on repairing your favorite possessions! For that reason\, their “ASK A FIXER” email link can be used with details of your broken item. A Fixer can then offer some advice and guidance on how to make the repairs on your own time. \nDisclaimer: The Philly Fixers Guild exists to help people repair their personal items and educate the community in general troubleshooting\, diagnosis\, and repair. The guild volunteers are not necessarily professionals or licensed in any way. Any repair work undertaken at a fair is done as a “Good Samaritan” effort and is for educational purposes only. No repair made at a Repair Fair carries any warranty\, promise of reliability\, or guarantee of safety. \nWhat are Second Thursdays? \nFor 17 years\, the Crane Arts Building has hosted monthly art exhibitions\, performances\, and openings on the Second Thursday of every month. Similar to First Fridays in Old City\, but not wanting to compete\, Second Thursdays were created to highlight the creative community of the North Philadelphia neighborhood – and well it stuck! \nAmerican St. is becoming a booming street for artists\, makers\, and creatives of all types\, and we invite you to come out to be a part of this. Between the Crane Arts Building and the Clay Studio\, the NextFab building at 1800 North houses eight businesses that will also be opening their doors on the second Thursday of every month. At 1800 N. American St. the creative work ranges from restoring historic neon\, sourcing salvaged materials\, empowering artists\, building bicycles\, supporting artisan businesses\, a gorgeous floral market\, and a restaurant mixing up amazing cocktails. Haylon is developing a unique control system for batteries. Their innovative solution enables device makers to mitigate the weaknesses inherent to any battery chemistry and maximize device performance and reliability regardless of conditions. In addition to optimizing achievable pack-level energy density and cycle life\, Haylon’s specialty hardware ensures an additional layer of safety not provided in today’s software-based solutions. Namin graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a certificate in Technology Commercialization. He has been working on hybrid energy storage since he published his first research paper in 2018.\nNathan Bivens is the CTO at FORT Robotics. FORT’s first-of-its-kind Robotics Control Platform gives robot builders and users safe\, secure\, and dynamic control over their machines.
