SUMMARY:NextFab COVID-19 Design Challenge (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed our world. As we return to the new normal\, what does it look like for the city of Philadelphia? What does a safe reopening of restaurants\, bars\, and stores mean? \nNextFab is putting a call out to the designers\, thinkers\, and innovators of Philadelphia to come together to ask ourselves\, how can we make a difference by creating ways to have healthier and safer interactions? We’re taking a “blue sky” approach to assessing problems and designing solutions\, where we’ll try to think outside of just the obvious solutions (barriers between cash registers and customers\, stickers on the ground six feet apart from each other\, etc.)\, and start thinking about social/emotional issues as well (fears of leaving your home\, uncertainty of new rules\, the ethics surrounding this new style of living\, etc.). \nThis will be a series of three webinars hosted by Machele Nettles (Industrial Designer and owner of Jewelry company\, Idol Light) and Chris Kolb (Industrial Designer at NextFab) to bring together members of the community to help collaborate on design solutions for a safe reopening of businesses in Philadelphia. \nIn the first workshop (July 7th\,10am ET) we’ll be talking about the design process\, diving into an icebreaker\, and having town-hall-style discussion where we’ll hear from you. We’ll close this webinar by sending out assignments for participants to start gathering information\, making observations\, and surveying family/friends etc. \nThe second workshop (July 10th\,10am ET) will begin by breaking into small groups to discuss your observations. We’ll then meet back as a large group to present our discoveries. From there we’ll break off into groups again to brainstorm solutions. We’ll close this webinar by creating small teams for the final assignment. \nIn the final workshop (July 14th\,10am ET) teams will be presenting their ideas/designs/solutions to the group followed by a Q and A. \nWe’re hoping that by organizing the designers and thinkers of Philadelphia into one place it will foster new relationships and create innovative solutions. We see this as a starting point\, and it is our highest hope that this challenge will spin off into other projects and groups to continue this important work. \nTo register for this webinar series please click here: \nWebinar One \nWebinar Two \nWebinar Three \n*Note: To participate in this Design Challenge\, you must be able to attend all three webinars.

SUMMARY:Virtual Business Coaching with Earl Boyd at South Philly
DESCRIPTION:Earl Boyd is a business coach and entrepreneur with nearly 40 years of business consulting and ownership experience. He is the creator of the 5 Step Business Start\, a digital online system that helps people start a business the right way. Earl is also Director of Entrepreneur Services at Entrepreneur Works and Entrepreneur in Residence at Philadelphia Fashion Incubator at Macy’s. \nEarl will be providing free business coaching consultations for NextFab members virtually on July 24th from 1pm-5pm. Schedule your appointment here. \n  \nEarl’s other endeavors include: \n\nBoard member for Scotch Porter (Quallis Brands)\nVice President Board of Directors for Ralston-Mercy-Douglass\nFormer member of the Board of Governors for Saint Joseph’s University Haub School of\nBusiness.\nFounding President of West Philadelphia Financial Institution – Led organization to co-develop\nand co-own $50 million shopping center (Park West Town Center) anchored by Lowe’s Home\nImprovement Center and Shop Rite Supermarket. Lowe’s store was the first to be built in an\ninner city/urban neighborhood in the U.S\n\n“An entrepreneur once characterized me as the ‘wise uncle’ that knows a lot about everything. She said\,\n‘Talking with him (Earl Boyd) is like talking with a family member or trusted friend about what to do with\nmy business idea\, how do I make money and how do I make an impact. He’s the person you go to when\nyou don’t know what to do (in business) and then he makes you believe that whatever it is you want to\ndo\, it’s possible.’ \nAfter thinking about her comment and reflecting on my career endeavors\, I graciously and humbly\nembraced the description\, not because I know everything about business. I am far from that. However\,\nafter 35 years of either being in business\, advising businesses or counseling entrepreneurs who are\nstarting businesses\, I have done a lot and seen a lot which gives me confidence in my knowledge about\nwhat to do and what not to do in business. \nStarting a business or being a business owner is a challenging task. My approach to coaching\nentrepreneurs is to provide you with substantive advice; that you can understand; delivered in a\nstraightforward\, personable style that allows you to walk away feeling confident and capable of doing\nwhat you want to do in business.” \nEarl Boyd
