DESCRIPTION:When it first entered Charles Willson Peale’s Philadelphia Museum\, the physiognotrace was a technological marvel. Tracing a human’s face\, scaling it down\, and producing a silhouette (or likeness) enthralled visitors. Today\, 3D scanning and printing are similar marvels. Taking digital images of objects and producing 3D models captures the imaginations of users\, designers\, and even museum professionals. \nCome to “Applying 3D Printing to History: Marvels of Technology” to discover connections between old and new technologies and learn a bit about how these technologies can be used to interpret historic collections. Hear about the artistry of Peale’s slave\, Moses Williams and new technologies. \nNextFab’s Walt Barger will present the technology of 3D scanning\, the modern way to realistically capture anything from a face to an artistic carving. A 3D scanner analyzes a real world object to construct a three-dimensional model. This model can then be recreated with a digital tool like a 3D printer. Walt will be taking us through the development and mechanics of this technology and speak to its current applications in art\, medicine\, and entrepreneurship. \nRSVP
